Some of you have asked me where I have been! I guess I could tell you the real truth...I have been learning about some new health products that may have saved my life! If you had asked me a month or two ago if I thought I was healthy, I would have said, "yes". According, to a recent DPA test I most assurdedly am not! The same test could save yours as well. Arterial stiffening, (also referred to as the loss of arterial elasticity or compliance), is a precursor to hypertension. The research has shown that stiffening of large arteries may be both the cause as well as a consequence of hypertension. Normal healthy arteries have elastic properties. As the left ventricle contracts and blood passes through the arterial system, the walls of the arteries expand (systolic blood pressure) and recoil normal position (diastolic blood pressure). Measures of aterial stiffness estimate the artery's ability to expand and contract with cardiac pulsation and relaxation. Early recognition of arterial changes may identify individuals at risk of complications of hypertension and therefor provide opportunities to delay or even reverse the hypertensive process. If arterial elasticity loss is not addressed early, there is a high probability that the process will progress. The Digital Pulse Analyzer provides measurements that capture characteristics of arterial function. This device uses a finger-tip apparatus which detects a pulse from the finger, transforms the information into an arterial pulse wave, and analyzes the contour to provide assessment of large and smaller artery behavior. There are two pulse waves generated with DPA. The first wave form is called a "Plethysmograph" which provides indices reflective of elasticity in large, small and peripheral arteries. The characterisitics of this pulse wave basically tell the story of how the arteries reacted as the blood traveled through the arterial system. When you lose elasticity, the pulse wave characteristic change. The second waveform is the "accelerated plethysmograph" that provides an estimated biological age of the arteries by assigning a letter grade from A to G. The DPA does not specifically provide a blood pressure but does provide valuable information reflective of arterial elasticity. However, if the index which reflects the large artery (EEI) is in the "low" range, this is frequently associated with hypertension or borderline hypertension and /or high serum cholesterol. If the biological letter grade is less than a "B", chances are the larger artery (the aorta) is stiffening! This is what I was experiencing!! Scary!! Lifestyle changes including improved diet, loss of excess weight, cessation of smoking and increased exercise can reverse the process of arterial elasticity loss. A positive dramatic change in both waveforms can be seen following a regimen of cardiovascular supplementation, specifically with the semi-essential amino acid, L-Arginine; a precursor to the production of nitric oxide. It is our responsibility as individuals to become proactive and protect our cardiovascular health. Early detection and monitoring of lifestyle choices is vital!
